Executive Board Meeting

Monday March 4, 2024

Centerville  2 Diner

 

Present: Lauren Buchmann,  John Bratton,  Marijane Ember,  Ruth Havercamp,  Georgie Hoff,  Mike Hoff,  Sue Hoxworth,  Geri Kull,  Carol Kurl,  Ellyn Miller,  Marge Rineer,  Carol Tangert,  Jean Young

Call to Order:  Lauren Buchmann, President

  The minutes from the January 8 meeting were distributed electronically. Carol Kurl made a motion to accept the minutes, and Carol Tangert seconded the motion.  The motion passed

Treasurer's Report:  Marijane Ember reported the following balances:  Beginning:  $11,194.35  Total Income:  $170.19. Total Expenses:  $3,030.40  Ending Balance:  $8,334.14. (January 1, 2024 - February 29, 2024) John Bratton shared the LCSR/PASR 2024-2025 budget.  TheTotal Income will be  $24,150, and the Total  Expenditures will be $24,150. Ruth Havercamp moved that the 2024 - 2025 proposed budget be accepted. Georgie Hoff seconded the motion. The motion passed. The treasurer's report will be held for audit. There was a discussion of the 2025 House of Delegates Meeting expenses.  LCSR  plans to send 7 members to the statewide meeting in State College.

 

Committee Reports:

Recreo:  Carol Tangert will be retiring as the Recreo Committee chairman at the end of the 2024 year. Carol thanked the board for their support over the years, and the board thanked her for her service.

Hospitality:  Sue Hoxworth reported the price for the Eden Resort luncheon is $23. Sue will be providing spring flowers for the centerpieces.

Necrology:  Geri Kull reported LCSR lost three members.

Newsletter:  Lauren Buchmann discussed sending the newsletter in E Mail form. The response to the E Mail newsletter was positive.

Retirement Planning:  Carol Kurl shared there will be 110 new retirees from Lancaster County. There will be a drop - in continental breakfast  at St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Millersville, on May 3, 2024. President Buchmann has updated the tri-fold. LCSR/PASR brochure.

 

President's Report:

Lauren suggested a "Design a LCSR Logo" contest.  Many PA chapters have a logo.  The contest information will appear in a future newsletter. Also, LCSR will purchase a swag for the Retirement Fair and the Recruitment Breakfast Meeting.President Buchmann thanked the By-Laws committee for working on the revisions. She especially thanked John Bratton who acted as scribe and prepared the final copy Recruitment Committee Members:  Each committee should strive to recruit at least one new member.Chair for Ed. Support Committee:  We need a chairman for this committee. Lauren asked for volunteers to attend the Franklin County April 18 Region 4 meeting at the Mercersburg First  Methodist Church.  Jean Young mentioned the Region 4 meetings are an opportunity to see what the other chapters are doing.  Mike Hoff, Georgie Hoff, Lauren Buchmann, Ellyn Miller, Carol Kurl and Jean Young will attend.

 

Old Business:

Marijane Ember reported the picnic will be September 18.  Peters BBQ will be contacted.  The program is T.B.D.

 

By Laws Revisions:  Carol Kurl moved to accept the By - Laws changes which will be presented to the membership on April 15.  Ellyn Miller seconded the motion.  The motion passed.

 

Retirement Fair:  Jean Young reported the April 27 Retirement Fair will be held at Chiques United Methodist Church, Mount Joy.

 

Fundraiser Event:  Marijane Ember suggested having a Trivia Day on Sunday, November 17, 2024.  Mike Hoff moved to authorize Marijane to firm up the date and location.  The motion was seconded by Sue Hoxworth.  The motion passed.

LCSR EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

Present:  Lauren Buchmann, Mary Ellen Donat,  Marijane Ember,  Nancy Frederick,  Ruth Havercamp,  Sue Hoxworth,  Geri Kull,  Carol Kurl, Ellyn Miller,  Becky Peifer,  Marge Rineer,  Jean Young

Call to Order:  Lauren Buchmann President.    Pledge Allegiance to the flag

Secretary's Report:  The November 6 meeting minutes were distributed electronically.  The report was approved by Becky Peifer and seconded by Marge Rineer.  The motion passed.

Treasurers Report:  Marijane Ember reported the following balances:  Beginning: $12,195.81 Total Income:  $3021.19.  Total Expenses:  $4022.65.  Ending Balance:  $11,194.35.  (November 1,2023 - December 31,2023)

President's Report:  Lauren shared information about Feeding America.  There is a statewide network of food banks.  The state goal is to raise $50,000.  Geri Kull made a motion to contribute $250 to the statewide network and $530 to the Food Hub.  Becky Peifer seconded the motion.  The motion passed.Educational grants were awarded by John Bratton and Lauren Buchmann on December 11,2023. President Buchmann reminded us that a fundraiser or a plea for donations may be necessary.

The President's Roundtable discussion will take place January 9, 2024 via Zoom.

 

Committee Reports:

Hospitality:  Sue Hoxworth shared the general membership meeting dates:  April 8, 2024 and November 4, 2024.  The location will be the Eden Resort and the entertainment will be determined in the future.

Necrology :  Geri Kull reported that we lost four members since our last meeting,  Lauren Buchmann reminded us the deadline for the newsletter is February 16.  Suggestions were made for newsletter content.  There will be a survey within the newsletter.  A color copy will be sent to members whose E Mail addresses President Buchmann has on file.  A print copy will be sent to all members.

SSMHF:  Jean Young reported our organization raises $1600 worth of cards.  LCSR sent out 90-100 Christmas cards.

 

Old Business:  

The picnic will be in September 2024.  Peter's BBQ will be the caterer.

Other Social Events:  There was discussion of having a Trivia Day/Night.

Lauren Buchmann reminded the By-Laws Review Committee (Carol Kurl, Marge Rineer, Ellyn Miller, John Bratton, Marijane Ember). they will be meeting some time in February  2024.

cretary’s Report:  The September 11 minutes were approved by Marge Rineer and seconded by Mike Hoff.  The motion passed.
Treasurer’s Report:  

•    Marijane Ember reported the following balances: Beginning : $14,611.33.  Total Income:  $945.23. Total Expenses :  $3,360.75. Ending Balance : $12,195.81. (September 1, 2023 - October 31, 2023).   

•    A correction ,  to the 7/1/2023 - 11/5/2023  Income/Expense Report (E Mail) , was made by John Bratton.  The correction  was approved by Carol Kurl and seconded by Becky Peifer. The motion passed.
President’s Report:  President Buchmann thanked all those who attended the Regional Meeting.
•    November 6 was the last day to register for the Zoom Leadership Conference.
•    The PASR fundraiser lottery tickets will be sold at the General Membership Meeting.  As of November 6 we had sold approximately 29 tickets.
•    President Buchmann read a thank you note from Kelly Dygart.
•    Shared the House of Delegates Necrology Booklet , and the PASR Chapter Growth Booklet.
•    Lauren reminded us that next year is an election year for LCSR officers.  She presented a photo of our new membership card.  The members agreed that it was an improvement over the former card.
•    Connie Ginder has resigned as Educational Support Chair.
•    There were 79 delegates, representing 60 chapters, at the House of Delegates.  79 is a low attendance number.  PASR has changed the way delegates are assigned for the 2025 House of Delegates. LCSR will be eligible for 7 delegates


Committee Reports:  
Community Service : Marge Rineer shared that volunteering is really good for your health.  She suggested that we ask other members ,who are already volunteering, to see where help is needed.  The Mount Joy Food Bank is in need of volunteers.
Educational Support – No Report
L/PEC :  Presently no chairman
Hospitality:    Sue Hoxworth  and Becky Peifer reported that we did not meet the threshold for avoiding a room charge at the next luncheon. The difference was only a few meals. After discussion John Bratton made a motion that we order enough meals to fulfill the $750 requirement and avoid the room charge.  Georgie Hoff seconded the motion.  The motion passed.
Membership:  Lauren Buchmann reported that there are still plans to have a membership recruitment meeting.  There was discussion of changing the dates when  LCSR offers the one year free membership to new retirees.
Necrology:  Geri Kull reported that we have lost three members since the September meeting.
Newsletter:  Lauren Buchmann shared information about the cost of color printing in a newsletter. She suggested an E Mail copy, of the newsletter could be sent to members who have provided email addresses with color photographs. We would continue to send the print copy to all members.
Recreo:  Carol Tangert reviewed her 2024 travel trip ideas.  She shared information about her planned trips and the seats she has available.
Retirement Planning:  Carol Kurl mentioned that we are still looking for suggestions to increase our new retirees membership numbers.  LCSR is still considering having a continental breakfast, possibly at a church, to meet and greet the newly retired teachers.. This will not happen until after early in 2024.
Public Relations:   Jean Young  shared information about the region 4 meeting.  The attendees met in small groups, with members from other counties. We discussed ways in which to make our chapters stronger, more effective and ways in which to increase membership numbers in each chapter.

Old Business:
Monte Carlo Night :  Marijane Ember led a discussion about Monte Carlo Night.  It was suggested that we try to return the event to Millersville University.  The next Monte Carlo Night might take place in the spring of 2025.  John Bratton talked about the potential fund raising ideas in the absence of Monte Carlo Night.  It was suggested that we could possibly ask members for donations.
Retirement Fair:  Jean Young is looking for a location for the spring of 2024.

New Business:   
•    Lauren Buchmann asked for volunteers to form an AD-HOC Committee to review the By-Laws. Carol Kurl, Marge Rineer, John Bratton, Ellyn Miller and Marijane Ember volunteered to serve on such a committee. A meeting date will be scheduled for January 2024.

LCSR/PASR  BOARD MEETING

Secretary's Report: The July 10, 2023 minutes were approved by Carol Kurl and seconded by John Bratton. The motion passed.

Treasurer's Report: Marijane Ember reported the following balances: Beginning:   $15,632.86  Total Income:  $405.53  Total Expenses:  $1,427.06   Ending Balance:  $14,611.33  ( July 1, 2023- August 31, 2023). 

President's Report: Proposed changes to PASR By- Laws were presented by John Chesters.  John Chesters  and Lauren Buchmann solicited feedback from the LCSR Board so that their votes would  represent the board's wishes. Jean Young assisted John with the By - Laws discussion information.The recruitment breakfasts will be tabled for future consideration due to the lack of interest from the recent retirees. The Mounted Patrol Police Officers will be visiting our picnic.  A $100 donation will be sent to their organization.There was discussion of finding out the names of retirees who are PASR members, but not LCSR members.

 

Committee Reports:

Picnic: Marijane Ember reported that 48 were registered for the picnic and the Mounted Police will be talking to our group.

Hospitality: Sue Hoxworth said the November 13 Birthday Party is planned, including a special cake with ice cream. Lauren Buchman reported that the entertainment will be tenor Brenten Megee. He will present a musical program, "Come Rain or Shine It's a Wonderful World."  His fee is $200. Donations for the Food Hub will be collected and Lottery tickets will be sold as a PASR fund raiser.

Retirement Planning: Carol Kurl said there are 57 new retirees in our county.

Necrology: Geri Kull said that we have lost 4 members.

Recreo: Carol Tangert shared a list of potential 2024 travel trip ideas. She shared information about her planned trips and the seats she has available.

Ed Support: There was discussion about where scholarship checks should be sent to be assured the funds are used appropriately.

Community Service: Marge Rineer and Ruth Havercamp said that they will be collecting money for the Food Hub at the November 13 Luncheon.

Newsletter: Lauren Buchmann set the information deadline as September 18.

Old Business:  Leadership Recruitment and Increasing Membership

New Business: The Region 4 Meeting will be held on October 25. As of 9/11 there were 5 volunteers: Lauren Buchmann, Georgie Hoff, Mike Hoff, John Bratton, and Ellyn Miller.
