PASR Hopes to Alleviate Hunger in PA

Hunger is certainly nothing new, but it is an increasing problem for many individuals as unemployment remains high and the economy remains stagnant. At its meeting in Mechanicsburg on May 1, the Community Service committee members discussed the issue and unanimously concluded that PASR chapters and members need to engage in efforts to alleviate hunger. The PASR board of directors agreed and voted, again unanimously, to encourage all chapters to either continue or to initiate a special project or activity seeking to alleviate hunger in their areas during the year.

The idea for this statewide PASR initiative to organize and promote activities for members to help alleviate hunger originated in our Greene Chapter and Region 7. Click here for PDF of article or go directly to the PASR website at www.pasr.org or for the article: PASR Hopes to Alleviate Hunger.

GCASR Donates to the Food Bank

GCASR (Greene County Association of School Retirees) recently donated $1585 through the generosity of our members to our local food bank. Pictured to the left is  Candace Webster, executive director of Corner Cupboard Food Bank  with GCASR President, Lori Greene. This followed an appeal to PASR (Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees) members during February in which PASR partnered with Feeding Pennsylvania, a non- profit organization that works with food banks across the state to help the 1,401,920 Pennsylvanians, including 399,270 children, who are currently struggling with hunger meet their nutritional needs. With the help of generous PASR members, $43,490 was raised for Feeding Pennsylvania! Corner Cupboard does not benefit from this effort.

Corner Cupboard is the food bank for Greene County Pennsylvania that serves roughly 2,000 individuals each month through a network of 11 pantry distribution sites. Food Banks are not government agencies. They are private organizations that get most of their funding from individuals, businesses and grant sources. In operation for nearly 30 years, Corner Cupboard’s mission continues, thanks to the support of our community. Food and monetary donations are gladly accepted and volunteers are invaluable to this service.  The food bank has 3 full-time and 1 part-time person on their staff. The pantry distribution sites are managed by over 100 volunteers. With a nonprofit status, Corner Cupboard can purchase approximately $25 worth of food for every $5 that is donated. The Food Bank purchases $5,000-$8,000 worth of food each month. Pallets composed of a combination of donated inventory, purchased food product and government commodities are prepared on a weekly basis and delivered to our pantry sites for distribution.

School retirees are particularly sensitive to the needs of children and adults who sometimes do not have enough to eat. GCASR is represented on both the Summer Food Program Task Force which organizes programs for summer meals for children and the Greene County Food Security Partnership which addresses needs for individuals of all ages.

Attached is a flyer which describes Greene County Food Programs. There are many resources available to those in need. If you would like join our efforts by serving on the Task Force or Partnership Committees, please contact our Chairperson. Your participation would be greatly appreciated!

If you are interested in volunteering in one of Greene County's Corner Cupboard Food Banks, please complete and return the Volunteer Form to them at 881 Rolling Meadows Road, Waynesburg, PA 15370.

Court Appoint Special Advocates for Children - CASA

CASA of Greene County's mission is to advocate for the best interests of neglected and abused children involved in dependency court proceedings.  CASAs ensure that these children are in safe permanent homes as soon as possible and that their needs are met while they are in foster care.  This mission is accomplished by recruiting, training and supervising community volunteers who serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates for these children.
